Make a dish using biscuits
Ingredients:
For the Biscuits:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup milk
For the Gravy:
- 1/2 pound ground pork sausage (or vegetarian sausage for a meatless option)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Make the Biscuits:
a. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
b. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
c. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
d. Pour in the milk and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
e. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
f. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out biscuits. Place them on a baking sheet.
g. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
2. Make the Gravy:
a. In a large skillet, cook the ground sausage over medium heat until it's browned and cooked through, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks. If you're using vegetarian sausage, follow the package instructions for cooking.
b. Sprinkle the cooked sausage with 2 tablespoons of flour. Stir well and cook for 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw flour taste.
c. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle simmer. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
d. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Keep it warm on low heat, stirring occasionally.
3. Serve:
a. Split the baked biscuits in half.
b. Pour the warm sausage gravy over the biscuits.
Enjoy your homemade biscuits and gravy! It's a comforting and hearty dish that's perfect for breakfast or brunch. You can also add a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and freshness.
